Helpful tips for configuring the Style Guide in your Brand Voice

Updated over a week ago

Phrasee's innovative Style Guide is the easiest and most effective way to control the grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, stylistics, and emojis of your content generation. Let's walk through each of the settings below so you can set your content output to match your brand style from the word go.

Editing your Style Guide

From the Brand Voice Library, click the pencil icon on the Brand Voice you wish to configure.

You'll then land on the Style Guide page.

Region

From within the Style Guide, you can configure the Region you selected when you created the Brand Voice initially. This is the setting from which you'd this Style Guide will inherit general settings (e.g. vertical, date formats, currency, regional spelling, etc.).

You can always change this default region in the future if required, and it will not affect anything you have configured and saved to your account.

Industry

You can select an industry from our list using the dropdown. Even if the industry doesn't perfectly align with how you think of your business, it does help our proprietary engine add some additional context to the language you'll be requesting.

If you don't see an industry you feel reflects your Brand Voice adequately, Ecommerce site/retail store is a good general purpose retail selection.

Punctuation

The first major widget you'll encounter is the Punctuation widget.

Here you can select:

  • Punctuation marks Phrasee can use when generating content. You'll see three defaults which cannot be changed.

    • Click the + Punctuation button to see the list of additional selectable punctuation to add to your account.

  • The Dash style. If a dash is used within a variant, what style do you want? If you never want a dash to be used, select None.

  • Specific rules around spacing and capitalization for punctuation.

Stylistics

Here you can configure the Stylistics elements you'd like to use in your generations. If you never want Phrasee to use the available options, simply move the slider to the left until it reaches Never.

The slider value for How often should Phrasee use these in generations? will provide a probability percentage for how often the selected stylistics will be used in generations.

The slider is not a firm percentage of variants per generation that will contain stylistics. For example, if the slider is set to half (50%), it does not indicate half of all variants returned will contain stylistics. Rather it indicates there is a 50% chance there will be some variants returned with your enabled stylistics.

Capitalization settings

Here you can choose between Sentence case or Title Case for your content variants.

You can also specify certain words that may be fully capitalized in a variant. You can add them by clicking the + Word button and typing in the word. Mash enter/return or tab on your keyboard, and the word will be added to the list.

Similar to the probability slider in Stylistics, Phrasee will only generate some words in capital letters if the slider is set to a probability greater than Never.

Alternative words

This widget allows you to configure replacement rules for any words you don't want Phrasee to use in your generated copy.

To add a new row in the table, click the + Alternative word button. This will insert a new row at the top of the table. Here you can enter in the Original word or phrase, select the Part of speech for that word and add Replacement(s) to the final column.

In the example below, a UK-based company wants the word vacation to be replaced by holiday in the event the word vacation is generated within a variant.

Never generate

Within this widget, you can add words and emojis you never want generated in your variants.

To add a word, simply click the + Word button, type or paste the word and mash enter/return or tab on your keyboard. To add an emoji, just click the + Word button, paste in the emoji and mash enter/return or tab on your keyboard.

Emoji use

If you want Phrasee to generate emoji in short-form content, you can configure this widget to set a probability and locations in the content you'd like the emoji to appear.

You should add any emoji you'd like Phrasee to use in your generation to the widget just below the Emoji use area.

Click + Emoji to create a new row. Paste any emoji in the Emoji column. Then, add any words you'd like associated with that emoji in the Trigger words column.

Once you've completed all your changes, click the Save button in the bottom-right corner.
